Understand learning through specific skills
A subject mark gives a useful summary, but teachers often need more detail to plan the next lesson. A child may read words confidently and still need help understanding a short passage.
InstiKit's competency based exam module lets schools record these skills separately. Schools define learning domains and indicators, and teachers select a grade for each indicator for a student.
For the policy background and a practical school checklist, read our NEP 2020 guide to competency assessment and Holistic Progress Cards.
Set up learning domains and indicators
A domain is a broad learning area, such as language development. An indicator is a specific skill within that area, such as following simple instructions or describing an event in the correct order.
Schools can name their domains and indicators, give them codes, and arrange them in the order they want teachers to assess them. The competency setup is linked to a grading scale and assigned to the relevant exam schedule.
This gives teachers a common set of skills to work with while allowing the school to use its own assessment language.
Record grades for each student
The teacher selects the exam, class or section, and student. The assessment form then shows the domains, indicators, and available grades from the assigned competency setup.
Teachers can record and update grades within the permitted marks entry period. When automatic locking is enabled, the school's lock settings also apply to competency evaluation.
For example, a school could use separate indicators for reading words and understanding a passage. Recording a grade for each helps the teacher see which skill needs more practice. These are examples; schools define the actual indicators and grade names they use.
Customised HPC marksheet generated on demand
HPC stands for Holistic Progress Card. It gives schools a way to present student progress across the learning areas they assess.
InstiKit supports a customised HPC marksheet as part of its competency based exam module. The marksheet is generated on demand according to the school's requirements. Schools share their preferred format, learning domains, indicators, and grading scale so the report can be prepared around those needs.
The HPC is a customised reporting requirement rather than one fixed format for every school. The sections and presentation are agreed for the school's requested marksheet.
Use assessment records in teaching and parent meetings
Indicator grades give teachers specific points to discuss with parents. Instead of a broad comment about needing improvement in language, a teacher can explain which reading skill needs practice.
The same records can help class teachers plan follow-up activities and discuss learning needs with the academic coordinator. The purpose is to make the assessment useful after the report has been prepared.
